About glp-1 medications

before the introduction of these "wonder drugs,"...

most healthcare providers believed that weight loss and obesity were simply due to a lack of willpower or maybe issues with the modern diet. that understanding was flipped on its head when researchers realized that GLP-1 receptor agonists could help patients lose weight without strict diet and exercise regimens.

it is now well established that patients are not "the problem," rather, patients are living with an illness that now has a treatment.

semaglutide*:  this medication mimics the hormone GLP-1, which is naturally produced in the body. semaglutide is the active ingredient used in FDA-approved ozempic©, wegovy©, and rybelsus©.  patients using FDA-approved versions of semaglutide often experience weight-loss of 15% of their body weight or more. on top of the incredible weight loss, these FDA-approved versions of semaglutide have been associated with improvements in blood sugar, heart health, and even longer life.

tirzepatide*:  the newer, more effective cousin of semaglutide mimics two hormones, GLP-1 and GIP, which allows for greater weight loss and less side effects. tirzepatide is the active ingredient in FDA-approved mounjaro© and zepbound©. these FDA-approved versions of tirzepatide have been associated with weight loss of 25% or more of overall body weight. similar to semaglutide, FDA-approved versions of tirzepatide have also been associated with many other improvements in overall health.

FAQs

What are GLP-1 medications, and how do they assist with weight loss?

GLP-1 medications, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, mimic a natural hormone in your body that regulates appetite, blood sugar, and digestion. They help you feel fuller longer, reduce cravings, and support steady, sustainable weight loss.

How long does it take to see results?

Many individuals notice a reduced appetite within the first few weeks. Our goal is to promote healthy weight loss, approximately 1 to 2 lbs lost per week. Significant weight loss typically occurs over several months, with optimal results around the 6-12 month mark when combined with healthy eating and regular physical activity. Though these results have been shown through extensive clinical testing of name brand medications Wegovy and Zepbound, similar results have not been proven for compounded medications, although anecdotal evidence and clinical experience suggest results may be similar.

What about compounded GLP-1 medications?

Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide may be an appropriate option for some patients. However, it is important to understand that compounded medications have not gone through clinical trials or testing for safety and efficacy and are not FDA-approved. There are additional risks involved when taking semaglutide or tirzepatide from sources other than branded, FDA-approved medications that you should discuss with your prescriber before using compounded medications. Compounded GLP-1 medications must not be confused with name brand medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Mounjaro, or Zepbound. They are not the same drugs. Only a licensed prescriber can determine if a compounded medication may benefit you.

Are there any side effects?

Common side effects include mild nausea, bloating, or digestive changes, which often improve as your body adjusts. Staying hydrated, eating smaller meals, increasing protein intake, and following our guidance can help minimize discomfort.

Do I have to take this medication indefinitely?

Not necessarily. GLP-1 medications are tools to support long-term weight management. Some individuals continue using them, while others transition off with the help of lifestyle changes. We'll work with you to create a plan that aligns with your goals.

Do you prescribe Retatrutide?

Retatrutide is a peptide compound that is still undergoing research. Although it (along with a number of other research peptides) has shown promising results in preliminary clinical testing, it has not been approved for use in any drug by the FDA. Texas Obesity Medicine does not currently prescribe Retatrutide, but we are closely watching its development.

What are the costs of these medications?

Costs vary significantly depending on insurance coverage and medication prescribed. For instance, name brand, FDA-approved Wegovy can cost over $1000 per month if prescribed through a traditional pharmacy. On the other hand, the same FDA-approved medication, if prescribed through Novo Nordisk's newly established direct-to-consumer pharmacy program called NovoCare might only cost $499 per month. As another example, an individualized, non-FDA-approved compounded medication combining semaglutide and B-vitamins to help with gastrointestinal issues might only cost $99 per month, although it comes with the additional risks associated with compounded medications and can only be prescribed if medically-indicated. Finally, a non-GLP-1 medication, such as generic oral phentermine, may cost only $20 per month at a traditional pharmacy--or less if covered by insurance. As always, it is important you discuss options with your doctor, but note that cost is not a valid reason for a prescriber to prescribe compounded medications.
